What is Solid Surface?
Solid surface composition and the 6 best brands.
Material Composition
Our Solid Surface material is made from a combination of natural minerals (about 70%) and acrylic polymers (about 30%). The natural minerals are primarily alumina trihydrate (a byproduct of bauxite ore), which gives our surfaces their solid, durable structure, while the acrylic polymers provide flexibility, resilience, and the ability to create a smooth, seamless surface. This blend results in a non-porous, versatile material that is both durable and easy to maintain. For further information on composition see the Corian Data sheets here.
Solid surface is the only choice for hygiene and healthcare. See Corian healthcare info here.
Best Brand Choice
At Dorset Seamless Surfaces we use Corian, Hi-macs, Hanex, Krion, Tristone and Staron as they are proved to have have the best natural material content. The material is more stable than other types making it easier to fabricate and strong once fitted.
Why Choose These Brands?
-
Seamless Design: Solid Surface can be joined together with virtually invisible seams, allowing for seamless countertops, backsplashes, and sinks. This creates a sleek, cohesive look without visible lines or gaps, which is a key advantage over other solid surface materials that may show seams more noticeably.
-
Durability: While many solid surfaces are durable, the combination of acrylic polymers and natural minerals makes these solid surface products exceptionally resistant to cracking, chipping, and scratching. They are also less prone to discoloration over time, unlike some other materials that may yellow or stain.
-
Repairability: Our surfaces can be easily repaired if scratched or damaged. Minor scratches can often be sanded out, and the surface can be restored to its original appearance. This makes it more cost-effective in the long run compared to some other solid surfaces that may require more expensive repairs.
-
Wide Range of Colors & Patterns: Our choice of brands offer an extensive palette of colors, patterns, and finishes, many of which are exclusive to the brands. Our ranges includes both vibrant hues and natural stone-like patterns, giving designers more flexibility and options.
-
Non-Porous: Like most solid surfaces, our solid surface is non-porous, which means it doesn’t absorb liquids or harbor bacteria. However, their smooth, polished finish makes it particularly easy to clean and sanitize compared to some other materials that may have a more textured surface.
-
Brand Reputation & Innovation: DuPont and other brands we offer, are trusted and known for their innovation in materials science. The company’s we use continuously invest in research and development and stay at the forefront of performance and design.
-
Environmental Considerations: All our brands have made strides in making their products more eco-friendly by introducing recycled content options and designing the material to be fully recyclable at the end of its lifecycle, which may appeal to environmentally conscious consumers.
-
Silica-free surface materials: making them a healthier choice compared to stone-based surfaces like granite or quartz. Unlike these materials, which contain crystalline silica and can release harmful dust when cut or ground, Our Solid surfaces are made from natural minerals (like alumina trihydrate) and acrylic polymers, which pose no respiratory risks. This means there’s no danger of inhaling silica dust during fabrication or installation, offering peace of mind for both workers and homeowners.
